Her most important works include Gone with the Wind (1939), The Great Lie (1941), and Since You Went Away (1944). She was also a singer and dancer before appearing on the cinema screen in the movie The Golden West (1932). She was the first African American to win an Oscar, the first African-American woman to sing on radio, and the first African American to attend the Academy Awards as a guest. She died on October 26, 1952 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, of breast cancer. She was the first African American to be buried in Los Angeles' Rosedale Cemetery.
