• A British writer, born in Cairo, Egypt, and moved with his mother to London, where he was educated at Alleyn's School and Dulwich College, in south London. He began studying...Read more medicine at Guy's Hospital, London. During World War II, he moved to the United States, where he worked for the British Ministry of Information and wrote propaganda to encourage the United States to join the Allies. He eventually settled in Berkeley, California, and in 1942, while living in Washington, he met a young British intelligence officer named Roald Dahl, who heard about his experiences in the RAF and encouraged him to write about it. He wrote other novels, including The African Queen and The General, and The Happy Return, which he wrote on a boat in the United States. He died on April 2, 1966 in California, United States.
