She starred in her first feature film Swallows and Amazons, based on the book by...Read more Arthur Ransome, in 1974. She later appeared in the BBC series Disraeli. She also received acting training, first at the Anna Scher Theatre School and later at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Her next significant role was in Richard Loncraine's 1982 film Brimstone and Treacle, based on the Dennis Potter play, and she also appeared in Tess (1979) and Birth of a Nation (1983).
