A British actor born in Newport, Isle of Wight, UK. He studied theater at the Old Vic dramatic school. His stage debut was in Cambridge in 1925 and in London in 1927. He toured London and France, appearing in works of Shakespeare afterwards, and appeared on the West End in 1934....Read more He was also a cofounder of the British Equity in 1929. His film debut was on The Amateur Gentleman (1936). Other notable works of his include A Matter of Life and Death (1946), The Red Shoes (1948) and The Barefoot Contessa (1954). He was awarded a CBE in 1991 in recognition of his services to drama. He married 3 times and had one child. He died of stomach cancer on 30 September 1998 in Heathfield, East Sussex, UK.
