An American ski and surfing champion and actor, he was born in Beverly Hills, California, on October 8, 1937. He was one of the first surfers of the modern era, who rode the huge waves of Waimea Bay on the North Shore in Oahu, Hawaii during the fifties, and also contributed to the development of surfing technique. Among his notable works: Barefoot Adventure (1960), The Endless Summer (1994), and Muscle Beach Party (1964). He died in Oahu, Hawaii, on May 16, 2002 from a brain tumor
