He was one of America's leading watercolor masters, as a painter at the forefront of the California Style School of Painting, best known for his urban and landscape paintings, as well as for his work in graphic design in the industry. He was born in Auckland to immigrants from Hong Kong, who returned to it when he was 6 years old. He attended Bok Jae School, then Chan Sun Wen School, where he excelled in calligraphy and watercolor painting. He returned to America and joined Fox Morgan School of Art, focusing on watercolor painting. During World War II, he was drafted and worked as a map artist in the Office of Strategic Services. After the war he served as an art teacher at Columbia University and Hunter College from 1946 to 1956, during his work he drew paintings and dealt with several galleries. Among his most important works are: Days at Peking (1963), The Yin and the Yang of Mr. Go (1970), and Flower Drum Song (1961). He died in Manhattan, New York on May 12, 2000 of pancreatic cancer.
