When a group of Salafists tries to demolish the shrine of Khawaja Abdul Kader, Kamal stops them by recounting the story of the Khawaja (the foreigner).

Abdul Kader was born Herbert Doperfield. He becomes a drunkard after he loses his brother in WW2. He travels to the Sudan to work and he takes up his job among quarry workers. The ministry decides not to demolish the shrine. Kamal is pleased.

Herbert is so desperate that he attempts suicide, but he is rescued by Fadl Allah, one of his workmates. The two men develop a friendship.

After Herbert wakes up from a coma, Fadl Allah advises him to quit drinking to stay healthy and safe. Kamal's son goes into his sister's room to find her dancing to music, and he beats her.

Herbert begs Fadl Allah to buy him liquor. Fadl Allah throws away the liquor, and fills the bottle with a juice that tastes the same. Abdul Kader still fights with people over the Khawaja's shrine.

Herbert converts to Islam, and takes the name Abdul Kader. On a different storyline, Kamal's son, Abdul Kader, is arrested for joining the Muslim brotherhood. Kamal returns to Egypt to find his son.

Kamal informs the family that young Abdul Kader was arrested by the State Security. Meanwhile, the Khawaja is trying to come closer to God and stop drinking.

Mr. Klein decides to take the Khawaja Abdul Kader with him to Egypt because he is a good company. In Egypt, Hajj Abdul Zaher welcomes them.

Kamal tries to console and reassure his son Abdul Kader when he returns from Egypt. Khawaja Abdul Kader tries to convince Atout to stop stealing and find an honest job.

Khawaja Abdul Kader teaches young Kamal music, and in exchange Kamal teaches him the Arabic language and the Quran.

Young Kamal's father passes away, and the Khawaja decides to take on the responsibility of raising the child. However, some people oppose his decision because the Khawaja is a stranger, and he cannot live in the same house as a widow.

The Khawaja meets the leader of The Chased, and tries to convince him to do good and refrain from evil. Abdul Zaher asks the Khawaja to teach his son the English language.

The Khawaja starts teaching Youssef. He meets Zeinab, and they engage in a conversation about aspirations and music.

The Khawaja is completely shaken up by the news that Sheikh Abdul Kader passed away.

The Khawaja writes to his sister Carrie about his new life. A while later, demonstrations in opposition of the British invasion break out. The Khawaja is arrested, but Hajj Abdul Zaher manages to get him released.

The Khawaja goes for a walk with Kamal, and they both rejoice with the people. The Khawaja then meets Zeinab, and they stroll around the city together.

The Khawaja and Zeinab converse all night long, then Mansour El-Aama, the leader of the Chased, sees them. Later that day, they learn that Mansour was planning to kill Hajj Abdul Zaher.

Young Gamal has a fever, and is transferred to the hospital to receive the necessary healthcare. At the hospital, the Khawaja sees Mousa who needs an urgent blood donation. Mansour thanks the Khawaja when he donates blood to Mousa.

Kamal gets back on his feet, and the Khawaja makes new friends.

Youssef Abdul Zaher travels to Egypt and stays with his second wife after he delivers the stolen relics to his partner. Abdul Zaher kills Mansour El-Aama.

The Khawaja wants to see Zeinab, but when he couldn't, he decides that he wants to learn poetry, but he utterly fails. The Khawaja remembers Sheikh Abdul Kader's words that he can do anything if he puts his heart to it.

The Khawaja travels with Kamal to Egypt where he visits Al-Azhar Mosque and other religious monuments. He tells Zeinab he loves her, and she tells him that she loves him too.

The Khawaja proposes to Zeinab, but her brother stands in the way of their love and refuses to allow them to get married.

The Khawaja still insists to marry Zeinab, but even her son Kamal doesn't approve of their union, making the situation even harder for the two lovers.

Abdul Zaher prevents Kamal from seeing his mother to dishearten her. The Khawaja is completely desperate, but remembering Sheikh Abdul Kader's words relieves him.

Abdul Zaher fuels a rumor that the Khawaja is having an affair with a dancer, and he should be whipped. Zeinab threatens to kill herself if the Khawaja is tortured, and Abdul Zaher threatens to imprison the Khawaja.

With her brother Abdul Zaher against their marriage, Zeinab suggests that they have her other brother Zayed as their witness. Zayed is saddened by the news that Shahaweya is pregnant, while Youssef is pleased that his second wife is pregnant.

The Khawaja's wife surprises him after years of separation and asks him to return with her. Despite the Khawaja's many attempts to prove his love for Zeinab, she rejects him and asks him to return to his wife and his country.

Abdul Zaher shoots the Khawaja. When he recovers, he reunites with Zeinab and marries her.

Abdul Zaher is enraged to know that his sister married the Khawaja and he orders them captured and burnt alive, but they survive his plot and escape to Sudan. Youssef Abdul Zaher fails in his attempt to bring down the Khawaja's shrine.
